The Birth of Demons Lounge

by Kevin Muldoon

In late 2010 I was introduced to Sam on a drunken night out via a mutual friend. It wasn’t long until we were both boring others at the table with affiliate marketing chat and bouncing ideas off each other.

This was, in a way, a chance encounter. You see, people who make money through the web don’t just bump into each other. If you want to meet someone else in the same line of work then you need to arrange it beforehand via email or network by attending a conference. In the close to 11 years I have worked on the web I had never once bumped into anyone who did the same thing I did. Sure, I have lots of friends of friends who design websites for companies or work in IT, though I haven’t met anyone else who builds websites specifically to make money from advertising and affiliate products.

Sam was (and still is) doing very well in the affiliate world in a number of niches with his good friend Kevin Mackay. Although I made ok money marketing affiliate products years ago when I first started, the last 5 or 6 years I have moved more into content bases websites. It was clear that we could all help each other make more money.

Once we realized that we all have different skill sets we decided to create a central blog for us to pour our thoughts and ideas onto the web, and that is what Demons Lounge is all about; a place for us to share our success and failures with others, bounce ideas off to similarly minded people, and a place for us to have fun and network with like minded people.

Our hope is that readers will find Demons Lounge useful but at the very least we hope you enjoy reading it. All three of us are making a good living through the web but I can assure you that we don’t take ourselves seriously, so don’t expect to ever see us calling ourselves gurus or entrepreneurs.

The fact is, the internet is always changing, so the ways you make money through the web will always change too. I strongly believe that with an open mind you can learn just as much from beginners as you can from ‘so called experts’. This is in no way a slight on many of the respected marketers and bloggers out there, merely a reminder that you should take advice as face value and not take the information as gospel. Essentially, you should take what applies to you and discard the rest.

We genuinely hope that you enjoy reading Demons Lounge as much as we do writing it and if you do, please remember to subscribe to Demons Lounge. It’s the easiest way to keep up to date with our latest articles :)

Thanks for listening,
Kevin Muldoon

Who’s Behind Demons Lounge?

A little more information about the people behind the scenes.

In approximately 2005 I became aware that many people made a good living working from the comfort of their own home, and did not need a 9-5 job to make ends meet. This sent my mind into overdrive, and I wanted to learn exactly how they did it. Over the next five years, and still continuing today I soaked up as much information on the various subjects that I believed made someone successful in this new online world.

My early attempts at affiliate marketing were poor, but with each failure I learned an important lesson – lessons that I believe have helped me create a successful online business doing what I love. At this time I had never built a website, never sold a product, and never earned a single penny that wasn’t made ‘the old fashioned way’. I knew I had a steep learning curve ahead of me, and although I was impatient to move forward and earn money, looking back this period was exceptionally fun and definitely exciting. I knew it would take a long time to become a success, but I was willing to put in the hard work to make it happen.

As every failure slowly burns your confidence, it is the successes that you live for. The more you try and fail the less likely you are to fail – at least that is how it has happened for me.

I have now launched a number of successful websites ranging from online affiliate stores to price comparisons generating a healthy monthly salary. I am now in a great position and am moving to Thailand in January have moved to Thailand to continue doing what I do in the sunshine, from there I plan to continue traveling indefinitely; but the future holds what the future holds!

Sams sites include Logbook Loans & Payday Loans comparison websites.

Kevin Muldoon

Kevin MuldoonI started working on the web early 2000. My first website was a shopping directory. It was without word of a lie a horrible looking site (perhaps not at the time but looking back at it makes me cringe). Within a few months of developing the site I was generating commissions, which was enough for me to stick at it and continue to work on the web.

I have built and sold hundreds of small websites over the years and sold them via forums and auctions though I slowly moved towards working on fewer websites so that I can give them my sole attention. From 2003 to 2007 I had a lot of gambling websites (such as Texas Holdem Forums) in my portfolio.

I don’t think I realised how lucky I was to get into the gambling niche early. For example, there was one website which let you download mirrors of their sites (exact copies). I did this and uploaded their sites with my affiliate link to several domains. I literally never worked on these sites again and never once promoted them but around 3 hours of work brought me in tens of thousands of dollars of commissions.

Instead of working hard I did what any other guy in his twenties would do with cash and enjoyed myself and travelled (my second passion). I had some amazing times but with by putting less and less work into my websites my commissions decreased and I subsequently grew tired of the gambling niche so I moved towards blogging. I sold my last blog Blogging Tips in February 2010, which helped finance the purchase of my house.

My latest project is a WordPress focused blog called WP Mods. I plan on making that bigger and better over the next few years though I’m keen to branch into other areas, alone and with Sam and Kevin. I will be sharing my highs and lows on Demons Lounge so stay tuned :)

Kevin Mackay

Kevin Mackay“So what do you do?”  This everyday question is a nightmare if one of the things you happen to do is affiliate marketing.  I find it difficult to answer for 3 reasons.  First, I don’t define myself by a career, or what I do to make money.

Second, affiliate marketing is so awkward to explain to “civilians” that I usually just lie and say I‘m a web designer, which implies clients and fees and makes sense to people. If they are genuinely interested in knowing more then I’ll consider telling them that, yes, I do design websites, but my only client is ME, and the sites don’t cost me money, they actually MAKE me money.
[cue shrugging of shoulders.]

Oh, and the third reason I don’t like to answer this question is that it is a stupid, dead phrase that all the zombies ask without caring about the answer.  However, now and again someone comes along who gets it, is genuinely interested in learning and DOing, and knows that it is not some silly get-rich-quick scam but is a real business that requires time, energy and (a little) money.  If you’ve read this far down the page then you might be one of these people – so thanks for stopping by – I hope we can help you in your quest for your very own Freedom Machine!

You may be wondering what’s with the name “Demons Lounge”?  Readers from the UK might recognise the play-on-words with Dragons Den, but here are some definitions from the Demons Dictionary:

Demon: someone who makes money on the web thus giving them FREEDOM and POWER to live on their own terms.
Lounge: a place for demons to hang out and share ideas.
Evil Schemes:  any online project that provides you with a stream of income, or improves your life in some way.
